Watching the Parade?
Here's some things to keep in mind when planning for the day.
- Dress appropriate for this outdoor family-friendly event.
- Bring a lawn chair or picnic blanket to sit on.
- Bring a bag to collect candy & gifts from the floats.
The route takes 1 hour to walk according to Google Maps, Parades generally move slower than the average walking pace listed on Google. The parade is estimated to last 1.5-2 hours from start to finish.
If watching from the front of the parade, be there 15-60 minutes before the parade start time for the best spots. If you're planning a spot at the end of the parade, you're likely more safe to arrive at the start time or a little after, which gives you approximately 1 hour wait until the parade is visible (You will hear it coming before you see it.)
(To test your own parade route, enter the start and end destinations in a map, switch to walking mode then move the path points along the parade trail. Round the time out a bit to adjust for the speed difference of walking in a parade.)
This is an outdoor event spanning a nearly 4km trail. We encourage participants to check the weather and dress appropriately. We encourage dressing in layers, shorts under pants, t-shirts and sweaters. Bring a small bag to store your extra clothes, snacks and parade swag in!
The anticipation of waiting can be tricky for some kids. We encourage bringing some kind of activity book, toy or having a plan to help keep them occupied. Some games don't require any planning or preparing like iSpy (I spy with my little eye, something that is .... and then everyone guesses) or Share A Story (verbally make a story, each person making one sentence at a time).
We encourage checking the map, and scouting out a spot a few days in advance.
Bring a lawn chair, picnic blanket, or foam mats to sit on.
Be mindful of those around you please. This community event is welcome to all.
Kids, with parental supervision, will be encouraged to sit closer to the road as the floats come by they can safely step into the street and pickup the candy and swag being shared by the Lethbridge and area Businesses.
Many Lethbridge businesses close during the parade time. There are no known public washrooms provided for this event. We encourage using the facilities before leaving your home, limiting your liquid intake during the event and make a plan to get together for your favourite beverages after the event. There are plenty of great locations in Lethbridge ready and willing to host your group, and the Whoop Up Days Festivities are all over town!
